Are G10 and FR4 the same?
2025-12-03

Although G10 and FR4 are both epoxy resin-based glass fiber composite materials and look similar, they are actually different. FR4 is essentially a flame-retardant version of G10.

1.          1.Material Properties

• G10: Approximately 10% glass fiber content, high mechanical strength, excellent insulation and corrosion resistance, but poor heat resistance (only suitable for low-temperature environments). G10's flammability rating is 94HB (horizontal burning).

• FR4: Higher glass fiber content, more stable mechanical and dielectric properties, and superior heat resistance compared to G10. FR4's flame retardancy rating is UL94-V0.

2.          2.Application Scenarios

• G10: Suitable for applications requiring high strength but low heat resistance, such as aircraft, tool holders, and precision mechanical components.

• FR4: Widely used in PCB substrates, electronic insulation components (such as transformers and motor parts), and high-reliability electronic products.

3.         3.Cost and Processing

• G10: Higher price; its low-temperature limitations must be considered during processing.

• FR4: Higher cost-performance ratio, suitable for mass production, and with mature processing technology.
